Arisa took the break Tio had suggested. Kairi hadn’t been exaggerating when she had said they would accelerate Arisa’s training. Since the council meeting Arisa had done nothing but train with her aunt, or with Mira. Occasionally Isla was asked to help, but she was clearly there under protest. Her sullen looks and sharp tongue were rarely bridled in Arisa’s presence.

It didn’t help that Arisa was making little progress in any of her training. She had no idea how to access her Water Catcher powers. She wondered if the darkness she’d given voice to in Sar’s room had something to do with it. The darkness that had angered Takai so much…scared him, even. Arisa had thought everything was over between them, but just now, with the longbow, he’d gone out of his way to help her. She had wanted to say something to him. He’d looked like he wanted to say something too. But their feelings had gone unspoken. Was there still a chance for them, or did Takai represent her old life? Everything was different now she was here in Kengia. She was different – or at least, she wanted to be.

There was only one place to go now for respite.

Arisa’s heart fell when she arrived at the lakeside and could see no sign of Jaai. He was probably busy with the barge. She stood under the yew tree and watched the rippling of the lake – an undulating rainbow blanket. A smile came to her face as she imagined her father standing on this exact spot, marvelling at the same lake. This magical place was in her blood; it was her inheritance.

She let her mind wander to what her life might have been like if she’d grown up in Kengia. Things might have been much simpler. Happier. With a sense of completeness. From an early age she would have been taught all the things she was trying to learn now – cramming a lifetime of learning into days. She would have been at one with kira and every living object around her. She would have been surrounded by people like her, people like Jaai. She wouldn’t have known only a handful of Kengians, and those Kengians wouldn’t have ended up persecuted, taken or killed, like Hyando and Rea…

Rea. Arisa refused to believe her friend was the silver-eyes helping the Northemers. There must have been some misunderstanding, a mistake in the translation of the coded starling messages.

In any case, the Northemers did have the help of a powerful silver-eyes, and everyone was counting on Arisa being able to stop her. She heaved a sigh.

‘It can’t be all that bad,’ a voice came from behind her.

Arisa gasped in surprise and spun around to face Jaai. His brow was crinkled with concern.

‘Well…let’s see,’ she began. ‘An army of giant warriors is threatening to invade Kengia, with the help of Lamore and a rogue silver-eyes rumoured to have spectacular abilities. It’s understood they are close to creating explosive weapons capable of blasting through the Nymoi Alps.
