Long story short: I was in deep, deep shit. The next few days continued in much the same way. Selma would study or go to school. I'd stay inside, or wander the tracks on Pleasant Hill, and wait for her to return. After school, we’d hang out with Joanna—and, occasionally, with Joanna and Connor.

At night, I’d sleep on Selma’s floor, imagining what might—but would not and could not ever—happen.

Selma, complaining of the cold.

Selma, inviting me into her bed to keep her warm.

Selma—well, you know the rest.

My new routine was interrupted around lunchtime on the fifth day—a Tuesday, so Selma was at school. I was lying on Selma’s bed, attempting to read one of the history books she’d been assigned to read at school (The Empire and Her Colonies, if you’re interested), when I heard a knock at the door.

A knock.

At Selma’s door.

I froze. It could be a salesman, or a courier driver, or someone else anonymous.

Or it could be an elderly neighbor, someone at home during the day. Maybe they saw someone at home and came to chat.

Or it could be the police, investigating a complaint.

I ran through my options—and quickly realized that I didn’t have any. I couldn’t run, because I’d be seen. I couldn’t answer it, because I had no cover.

There was only one thing to do.

I hid under the bed.

As soon as I got under, I heard another knock, this one a bit more insistent—but after that, there was nothing. I counted to three hundred before I finally came out of hiding. I stepped into the hallway and stared at the heavy wooden door.

You’re safe, I told myself. Only a crazy person would still be standing there.

I was about to turn away and make lunch when I saw something on the carpet near the door. A small scrap of paper, folded in two. I thought it might be advertising, maybe a flyer for the neighborhood association—but when I picked it up, I saw that it was a note. Handwritten.
