“Anything we can do to make the teacher’s life easier is usually very appreciated,” explains Dr. Robinson. “Most high school teachers are surprised that parents don’t want to be involved in their kid’s lives. I think it’s essential every parent of an AD/HD student gets to every parent-teacher conference. Teachers have to know we are interested. It’s easy to assume that because our kids don’t hand in assignments that we don’t care either. Stay involved with the school, even when there are problems. I know it’s hard to go to conferences and have to sit and hear the negatives, but parents must become involved.”

Parents should always assess the teacher’s knowledge of AD/HD before sending a letter. “Some teachers only think of AD/HD as a severe behavior disorder,” explains Bruce Pasch, MD. “One high school teacher thought one of our students was mentally ill and advised other students not to associate with him.”
