Chapter 28

v1 The Judgement to Come; v5 Good Things to Those Who Do Good Works; v20 Conclusion of Discourse.

One does not receive the Knowledge of the Truth who does not believe that there is just recompense for one’s deeds;

And therefore, being bound by the pleasures of the present life, is shut out from eternal good things according to the weight of one’s transgressions.

Thus we do not neglect to proclaim to you what we know to be necessary for your enlightenment;

And to show you what is true reverence for the Lord;

That, believing in the teachings of The Way, you may be able, by means of good works, to be heirs of the Kingdom.

But if you are not yet convinced that what we say is true;

In the first instance, you ought not to take it amiss and to be hostile to us;

Because we announce to you the things which we consider to be good.

Labouring, with all eagerness, that we may have you as fellow-heirs of the blessings of good things to come;

We yet, do not hold it against anyone that few receive the teachings.

But whether those things which we declare to you are certainly true;

You shall not be able to know otherwise than by rendering adherence to those things which are taught;

That you may learn through the issue of things, and the most certain end of blessedness.

And, therefore, although that unclean spirit lurking within you occupies your senses with a thousand arts of corruption;

And throws in your way a thousand obstacles, by which you may be turned away from the hearing of liberating instruction;

All the more ought you to resist;

And despising that influence, to come together the more frequently to hear The Word and receive instruction;

Because nobody can learn anything who will not be still and listen.”

And when Peter had finished speaking, he ordered those to be brought to him who were infirm and oppressed by sicknesses or demons;

He then laid his hands upon them.

And so he dismissed the crowds;

Charging them to resort to the hearing of the Word during the days that he was to remain there.

Therefore, when the crowds had departed, Peter washed his body in the waters which ran through the garden;

Along with as many of the others as chose to do so.

He then ordered the couches to be spread on the ground under a very shady tree;

And directed us to recline according to the order established at Caesarea.

And thus having taken food and given thanks to the Lord after the manner of the Nazirenes;

As there was yet some portion of the day remaining, he ordered us to question him on any matters that we pleased.

And when evening came we entered with him into the lodging, and went to sleep, each one in his own place.
