New Testament Omissions

It is important to note the historical nature of the New Testament. It is also important to recognize which things the New Testament does not mention. For instance, there is no description of Nero’s persecution of the Christians. It was A.D. 64 when Nero began to blame the Christians for the burning of Rome, among other things. That horror is conspicuous by its absence. The execution of James the brother of John is mentioned in Acts 12:2, but the martyrdom of Jesus’ own brother James in A.D. 62 is not mentioned. After initially rejecting Jesus early in his life,[40] James converted and went on to become the leader of the Church in Jerusalem. His execution was an important event, yet there is no mention of it in any New Testament literature. A second century Christian named Hegesippus described the brutal public martyrdom of James, who was thrown from the top of the Temple and beaten to death with a club.[41]

Another crucial event was the Jewish revolt against the Romans in A.D. 66. That defeat ultimately led to the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 (which Jesus predicted in Matthew 24). The destruction of the Temple created a paradox for the Jewish people; they believed that “the shedding of blood was essential for forgiveness,[42] but when the Temple was destroyed, they were left without a place to make sacrifices. The peculiar book of Hebrews makes little sense unless it was written to Jewish believers while the Temple was still standing.

The exclusion of these events in the NT implies that those canonical letters were written prior to A.D. 70. The writings were evidently in existence prior to those historical events.
