Viva Las Vegas

In 1994, a dear pal, Maggie Moore, sauntered into La Focaccia and told me she had a brilliant idea. She’d spent the summer in Provincetown, Massachusetts, performing her one-woman show Are You There God? It’s Me, Ann Margret. There, she met a fantastic drag king performer named Julie Wheeler, who did a killer Elvis Presley impression.

Maggie’s idea was to do a staged performance of Viva Las Vegas, the famous Elvis Presley/Ann-Margret movie musical from MGM. She wondered if I’d be interested in playing the romantic foil/bad guy, Count Elmo Mancini.

Now, I liked and respected my friend greatly. I also thought she was off her rocker. First, a lesbian-drag version of an Elvis Presley movie musical? It didn’t exactly sound like a hit. Second, how and where the hell in Manhattan was she going to stage and produce it? And third, I was a classically trained theater actor, don’t cha know? I did Shakespeare, I did Tennessee Williams, I did Joe Orton! I was the Craig Archibald!
