In 1778, after a grueling walk of several thousand miles, more than thirty thousand United Empire Loyalists arrived in Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, and Upper Canada. Marshall and the Plunkets ended up in Nova Scotia.

Initially, Marshall lived with the Plunkets in a small dwelling in Halifax. Marshall began to court Maggie, which Christian and Frieda encouraged.

Christian escaped with enough money to set up a lending business. Marshall, who no longer had work to do with his hands, demonstrated that he could work with his brain when employed by Christian to arrange loans to help other Loyalists set up businesses.

"Although the people of Nova Scotia don't have slaves," Marshall told Christian "they seem to discriminate against coloured people in subtle and overt ways."

Christian nodded in agreement.

"Many coloured people who have fled slavery are living here," Marshall continued.

Again, Christian nodded.

"I suggest that we do not ignore them. That we make loans to those who want to start businesses and buy homes. We can expand our loan program and reap additional interest by lending more money."

Christian paused to think it over.

Wade spoke up. "The colour of money is the same, no matter the colour of your skin," he said. "I think the idea is brilliant, father. We only judge the worthiness of a loan based on the soundness of the business plan set before us and the willingness of the applicant to work hard."

Christian smiled. "I think we have just expanded our business plan."

Their honesty and fair dealings contributed in large measure to their success. People with skills and plans to build businesses often travelled on horseback or foot for several days to do business with the little bank with a big heart.

As the business grew, Marshall soon had enough money saved that he felt comfortable proposing to Maggie. She accepted his proposal and they had a lavish wedding attended by many United Empire Loyalists who they knew from the trek to Halifax and by customers, both white and black.

Shortly after they were married, Marshall felt his acorns heat up. He planted them adjacent to the house he was building.

A year after the marriage, Maggie gave birth to a son that she and Marshall called Edward Rhodes. "Now I have someone to whom I can pass on my share of the bank," said Marshall, as well as the family history and three acorns." As he said that, three red squirrels danced around his growing Oak tree and ran up and down its trunk.

Soon Marshall, Maggie, and their son, Edward, were able to play and sit under what was quickly becoming a mighty Oak.
