‘Oh, nice hair,’ Eric said, as Kate sneaked back into the office, via the back door. After her embarrassing encounter that morning, the last thing she needed was to walk into reception and find Ben entertaining another of his friends.

‘Thanks, where’s Ben? Still with his friend?’ Kate felt stupid for having been annoyed that morning. She berated herself for acting so out of character and while standing on her tip toes, she looked through the door that led to reception, hoped she’d see him, but all she could hear was Gloria’s voice as she answered the phone in a courteous and professional manner.

That’s what you need to be, a professional, she told herself. He isn’t interested and you of all people should know better. She thought of the times she’d worked alongside other colleagues, frowned upon working relationships and had seen how difficult keeping secrets had been. Some of the relationships would have stood a chance in the outside world, but in the force, it had been more than difficult, which should give her an indication of why it was so unbelievably wrong on all levels. Parker and Son was a small, intimate team and most of them were family, which was why she had to take control of her attitude, or face the consequences make an absolute fool of herself if she didn’t.

‘You do know who that friend was, don’t you?’ Eric pushed a large piece of a chocolate doughnut into his mouth and chewed while staring at his screen.

‘It’s none of my business.’ Kate stomped out of the office and back into the kitchen where she picked out one of the doughnuts, carried it back to the office and began to break it into pieces.

Eric laughed. ‘Okay, but, from where I’m standing, you look just a little too concerned with the fact that Ben may or may not have a friend and I just thought you might want to know who she is.’

‘I’m not concerned.’

‘Yes you are, otherwise you’d have already told me all about what happened with Isobel.’

‘Give me a chance. I was just about to tell you.’

‘Come on then. I’m ready.’ Walking to the evidence board, Eric picked up a pen and poised it, ready.

‘I didn’t really learn that much. It’s obvious that money means everything to her and she has a personal trainer that goes over most days, but other than that she didn’t really say anything else.’

Eric laughed. ‘Ah well, at least you got a haircut out of it. Now, tell me exactly what she did say.’

Kate shrugged her shoulders wondering how much she could remember. ‘Well, she mentioned a red Porsche with cream seats. Her therapist is buying one and she’s thinking of doing the same and calling it The Red Lady.’ She stopped, paused and thought. ‘Said she’d have it delivered at midnight so the neighbours didn’t see. She also hoped it wasn’t raining, because she didn’t want it to get wet.’ She picked up a pad and a pen, began scrolling on the page.
