Saffie grunted as she drifted back into consciousness. A sliver of saliva had escaped while she slept, and she instinctively wiped it away.

She was in a semi-recumbent position on her bed – or not her bed. This bed was bigger and squishier. Flocked wallpaper, silk sheets… where was she? This wasn’t her room. This place was all posh and plush – well, apart from the pillow behind her, which was lumpy as hell. She wriggled against it as she tried to smooth it out.

‘All right, no need to give me bruises,’ a deep voice said. ‘I was starting to think you’d never wake up.’

The date! That’s where she was: in her room at the hotel in Leeds.

Saffie shuffled into a sitting position. She was still in her date dress, although someone had pulled the duvet over her legs. Richard was sitting next to her on the bed, one arm around her.

‘Did we fall asleep?’ she murmured.

‘Eventually.’ He bent to kiss the top of her head. ‘We finally talked ourselves to sleep about 2.00 a.m., I think.’

‘Oh God, I’m sorry.’

‘Don’t be.’ He gave her a squeeze. ‘I can honestly say it was the most fun I’ve had in a girl’s bedroom with all my clothes on.’

She yawned. ‘I can’t believe we talked all night. Hey, do you think room service would bring us up a couple of full Englishes?’

‘Not for me. I need to rush off, I’ve got to work. I can ask them to send your breakfast up on my way out if you like.’

‘Why, what time is it?’

‘Nearly eleven. You really zonked out on me.’

‘God, really? I don’t think I’ve slept until eleven since university.’ Saffie looked up at him. ‘So our date’s over. We’re past the twenty-four-hour cut-off.’

‘And here I am running straight out on you. I’m sorry, I wish I could stay to share breakfast.’ He searched her face. ‘Until next time?’

‘Until next time.’

Richard kissed her before standing up.

‘Don’t forget me,’ he said quietly.

‘Don’t let me. You’ve got my number.’

‘Yes.’ Richard was quiet for a moment. ‘I’ll see you soon, OK? This has been…’

‘Unforgettable.’

‘That’s the word,’ he said, smiling. ‘Goodbye, Phil.’
