Aesculus pavia
Red Buckeye, Southern Buckeye
HIPPOCASTANACEAE (HORSE-CHESTNUT FAMILY)
PLANT AND LEAVES: Red Buckeye is a small, deciduous multi-trunked tree or shrub. Commonly reaching 10 to 15 feet tall with a bit more spread, trees to 30 feet or more are sometimes found. The leaves are opposite and made up of five leaflets joined at a central point on a petiole as long as the leaf. The leaflets are fine toothed, glossy dark green above, and whitish beneath. Autumn comes extraordinarily early for this species, its leaves falling as soon as late July.
FLOWERS AND FRUIT: Red buckeye is a handsome shrub with showy, spike-like clusters of deep red, pinkish, or sometimes yellow, funnel-shaped flowers. The flower clusters are 6 to 10 inches long, and the individual flower is 1 to 1-1/2 inches long. The fruit is a smooth, brown or greenish brown, leathery capsule containing one or two mahogany-colored, chestnut-like seeds.
FLOWERING: This species flowers between March and May. The fruit matures in the fall.
RANGE AND HABITAT: Red Buckeye is an understory plant commonly found on rich, sandy soils in wooded stream bottoms in east Texas; less frequently found southwest to Uvalde and along the Red River to Wichita County. It is native across the Southeast and in the southern Midwest. The yellow-flowered botanical variety, Aesculus pavia var. flavescens, is endemic to the Edwards Plateau.
