Chapter 9

Gresh pushed Sterling behind him, right into Lane’s arms. Gresh didn’t take his eyes off of David, afraid of what would happen if David got his hands on his son. “I think it’s time you leave.”

David’s gaze swung around the room as though he were looking for support, but he found none. “Sterling, mark my words, you will pay for this. You are no longer my son. I’d rather see you dead than living as a faggot. You are an abomination to this world.”

Gresh took a step forward, accessing his full height. “I want you off of my ranch, and I take back what I said earlier. You aren’t welcome here. If Sterling wishes to see you again, you’ll have to meet off of the ranch.”

The silence felt like the sun had disappeared, leaving Gresh wondering if winter had come to the ranch and sucked away all the heat. He hadn’t experienced this type of bigotry ever and to find it here on his ranch made him want to transform into a beast that could attack, ridding the world of the vile monster in front of him.

“Mark my words, I won’t stand for a faggot in my family. You are finished. I’ll make sure you suffer for your wicked ways.” David slammed out of the kitchen, Sterling’s mom following after him not looking back once.

The air didn’t return nor did the room warm as David left. No one moved and Gresh felt as if his heart had been ripped out. Sterling would feel worse. His dad had just disowned him. Hell, he’d practically wished death on Sterling and the cowboy was so young. How would he deal with the harsh reality of hatred?

Gresh spun around, his gaze zeroing in on the young man. “Sterling.”

It was like the whole room exploded. Everyone talked but Sterling. He raced from the house, the door slamming behind him. Gresh watched as Erick tried to go after him but his injuries were too great. He didn’t get more than a few feet before he toppled and almost crashed to the ground.
