Chapter Nine

DEAN’D LEFT Will back at the campground when he went hunting for a phone, not because he didn’t want Will to hear, but because….

Well, some shit a young man didn’t have to hear about, and him and Allen having a bit of a go-round? Was one of ’em.

He dialed the private number in Allen’s office, sighing as his brother answered. “Haverty here.”

“Allen, ’s me.”

“Dean? I didn’t expect to hear from you so soon. How’s things?” He plumb hated that sound in that voice, all skittish and cool, waiting for some damn bad news. Hated worse that he had some.

“Me and Will just spent a few days up at the farm, Bubba. Daddy ain’t doing so good. He’s needing.”

“Well, then. You know what I think on that. We need to sell the land, Dean.”

He shook his head, looking up at the trees, feeling the urge to slam the phone down. “That land’s been in our family for five generations. We got kin buried on the land.”

“That land’s worth enough money to put Daddy in a good home for a good long time and still have enough left over to maybe live on after you run yourself ragged.”

“Oh fuck that. Daddy don’t need some minimum-wage fuck nurses wiping his ass. It’d kill him.” His daddy was a good man, a strong man. One hell of a cowboy. Dean’d not have him go to strangers.

“Dean, man, he’s dying, and I’ve seen the bills coming in. He’s been missing tax payments; he’s going to lose the damned land.”

“What?” The news shook him, hurt him deep, and he couldn’t help the growl. “Goddammit, Allen! What the fuck have y’all done?”

“Me? You’re the one saying Daddy’s okay, doesn’t need a home.”

“He doesn’t need a home, you little prick! He needs a family!”

Allen snorted. “I have a family, Dean. Three kids, a house, a wife, a career. What the fuck do you have? A sweet little blond fuck buddy and a five-year-old pickup.”

“How much?”

Dean listened to the silence for a minute, listened to the sound of his heart pounding, and then Allen spoke. “How much what?”

“How much does he owe?”

“Right at eight thousand.”

Christ. Sweet Christ. His knees buckled a little, but he kept his voice calm. “I’ll pay the taxes.”

“It’s just land, Dean.”

“Not to me. Not to me. That’s… that’s home, Bubba. I’ll pay the taxes.”

He heard Allen sigh. “Fine. It’s your home, your land. Go home and take care of it.”

“No. It’s Daddy’s land. It’s Haverty land. It’s….”

“Whatever. I don’t think it’s that important.”

“I gotta go. I got plans to make.”

He didn’t wait for Allen’s goodbye. He just hung up the phone and headed back to camp.

Plans to make. Bulls to ride.
