Hank’s

Several days later, Milfoth returned to Dublin while Byron remained with her grandmother in Kerry. She leaned against the dishwasher with her arms folded, and said calmly: ‘Now, explain.’

Jimmy relayed everything that had taken place on the day of his disappearance. Milfoth didn’t interrupt, but at the end said: ‘Do you expect me to believe that shit?’

Jimmy replied: ‘If I was going to make stuff up, do you think I would come up with this particular flavour of shit?’

Milfoth felt caught between a duty to support her husband, who may have been through traumatic events, and the urge to smack him hard for being a liar. She chose to remind him that he had brought whatever had happened upon himself.

‘Well, I didn’t expect much in the line of sympathy from you,’ said Jimmy, ‘but if it wasn’t for the crucifix, I would be dead now. So once again, thank you.’

Milfoth seemed to weigh up the pros and cons of that scenario, and eventually said: ‘I won’t be buying you another one.’

The couple stood silently in their kitchen while each assessed their situation. Eventually Milfoth raised her head and asked: ‘So what now? Are you finished dealing?’

‘Yes.’

‘Are you sure?’

‘Yes, I am.’

‘Are you still in danger?’

‘I don’t think so.’

‘You don’t think so?’

‘I think both gangs have stated their positions clearly,’ said Jimmy, trying to sound reassuring.

‘Should we move?’ she asked.

‘Where to? We both have to be near Dublin for work. And I don’t think we could afford to move to another country.’

‘So we just sit here helpless, waiting for another attack? Maybe it’s time to get a guard-dog, and an alarm, and new windows?’

‘Maybe,’ said Jimmy. ‘These are expensive items, and anyway they mightn’t work.’

‘Well, what then?’ asked Milfoth, throwing her arms aloft. ‘Let’s go to the Gardaí.’

‘And tell them what? That I’ve been selling cocaine? That I met some nasty people and now I’d like their protection?’

Milfoth could see the difficulty.

‘Anyway, word would get back to Hank, and then he’d definitely have to kill me,’ said Jimmy. ‘Maybe I should have a word with Hank?’

‘No,’ said Milfoth firmly. ‘Don’t even think of going near him again.’

‘OK,’ said Jimmy.

‘Are you still spreading that shit on your body?’

‘What? The testosterone?’

‘Yes.’

‘Yes.’

‘Has it occurred to you to stop using it?’ said Milfoth. ‘Has it occurred to you that it might be more trouble than it’s worth?’

‘Yes, it has,’ said Jimmy. ‘Yes, it has.’
