Grace finished her walk and returned home. She fed her dog, a Maltese named Lucky, and gave him spring water to drink. She adored the dog and having him in her life made her feel less alone. After cleaning Lucky’s food bowl, she removed the leftover lamb stew from the refrigerator, so she could prepare her own meal. She’d been about to transfer the stew into a pan from the plastic container it had been in, when a man wearing a black suit opened the back door in the kitchen and walked inside.

Grace was startled and the container slipped from her hand, spilling the stew onto her white tiled floor. Lucky had barked at the man when he’d entered, but he turned his attention to the feast that had landed near him. Eating was more important than playing guard dog.

The man held his hands out at his sides to show he was unarmed. When he stepped closer to Grace, she noticed that he limped.

“Get out of my house or I’ll call the police.”

“It’s all right, Dr. Campbell. We aren’t here to harm you.”

Grace was opening her mouth to shout at him to leave when she realized he had used her name. He’d also said the word “We.”

She looked past him to the open doorway and saw no one else, but then she sensed someone moving up behind her. Grace spun around and saw two men who were casually dressed in jeans. One was tall and thin and the other had a stocky build. They weren’t holding weapons but with their jackets hanging open, she could see that they did have guns holstered on their belts. Her mind raced. Had she done something to make her superiors unhappy? If so, she didn’t know what that might be. She hadn’t altered anyone’s appearance in months, and the surgery had gone well. She turned back around to address the man with the limp.

“What’s this about? Are you with the police?”

The man smiled. “My name is Ezekiel. I have need of your skills.”

Grace felt some of the tension leave her. “You’re a client? That’s fine, but you want to talk to Sal Bianchi. Sal will set up everything.”

“This can’t be handled through the usual channels; I want to hire you myself. You’re coming with us now.”

“What? No! Do you know who I work for? I’m valuable to them. Hurt me and you’ll be sorry.”

“I don’t fear your employers. And with your help, I’ll soon be a different person and out of their reach.”

Lucky had finished lapping up the cold stew from the floor and began barking again. One of the men standing behind Grace attempted to kick the dog, but Lucky was quick and avoided the thrusting foot. Grace spun on the stocky man and gave him a shove.

“Hey, asshole. Don’t kick my dog. You hurt him and you’ll be sorry.”

“You can bring the dog with you,” Ezekiel told her. “And we’re leaving now.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Grace said, while picking up Lucky.

“You have two choices, Doctor.
