Chapter Twenty-Nine

‘You must be terribly tired,’ Jac said, inspecting Jean’s face. ‘But at least you’re no longer wet and cold.’

‘I’m fine,’ Jean said briskly. ‘Thank you, Jac, but we need to get on.’

That was a bit of a role reversal, Jean now the one with the business imperative. A knock at the door was a welcome interruption. For a moment there I’d feared the two ladies were about to have words, although I had no idea why. Stress, probably.

I opened the door to admit a waiter with a tray of sandwiches. A second waiter carried another tray, this one with a big jug of coffee and everything else we needed.

‘Excellent,’ Jac said approvingly, as she pressed a banknote into a waiter’s hand. ‘You’ve thought of everything.’

‘And how we needed it!’ I contributed as the waiters left the room. ‘Jean, grab something before I eat it all. I’d forgotten how hungry I was until I saw these trays.’

After a hesitation, Jean obliged. My heart went out to her. Probably the last thing she wanted to do was eat. There would be nothing on her mind but her children now that we were out of the reach of both sea and husband. But she would also know that if she was to keep going, she would have to eat. Simple as that. Sensible woman.

‘Let’s talk while we eat,’ I suggested, helping myself to a roast beef sandwich.

‘While I pour the coffee,’ Jac proposed.

‘The priority,’ I began, ‘is for you two to collect the children from their school in . . . Where is it again, Jean?’

‘Richmond, North Yorkshire. It’s a small private school there.’

‘Not too far, then.’ I took a bite and marvelled at the succulence of the wonderful beef. Jean was toying with her sandwich, but at least she’d drunk a cup of coffee.

‘As soon as you can, Jean — if you haven’t already done it — you’d better phone the school and let them know there’s a family emergency that means you need to collect the children. Then you should both get going. It would be nice for you to have a rest, but there isn’t time.’

‘I don’t want to rest,’ she snapped. ‘I can rest in the car, if Jac drives.’

‘Fine. You OK to drive, Jac?’

‘Of course.’

‘Once you have the children, take them to Risky Point. Jac, you can get a key from Jimmy Mack, next door. He’ll be delighted to see you all, especially the children. Then just stay there until things get sorted and you hear from me. It won’t be long.’

‘What will you be doing, exactly, Frank?’ Jac said. ‘Or shouldn’t I ask?’

‘I don’t know, exactly,’ I admitted, ‘but once I know you’re all safe at Risky Point, I’ll make a start. We can’t let Jean’s husband get away with it any longer.’

‘Will you contact Bill Peart?’

‘Probably. Jean, that’s a pal of mine in the Cleveland Police. He’s well-connected and knows how everything works.’

‘The police?’ she said hesitantly.

‘Yes. We have to talk to them now.’

‘I don’t want to end up in prison, Frank.
