CHAPTER 12
Westerleigh, Pilning and Audrey Channing were already there. Sinclair poured us both some coffee, then went and sat with Audrey, who was a little apart from the others. I sat with Westerleigh and Pilning.
âGood morning, Tom,â said Westerleigh. âDid you sleep well?â
âLike a log, thanks.â
âIâm glad,â he said, smiling. âSome of our guests have found the comings and goings of the night staff a bit disturbing.â
âI didnât hear a thing.â
âGood. I gather youâve been with Dr Sinclair this morning.â
âThatâs right. I hope you donât mind my going to him without seeing you first.â
âNot at all. I hope you found it . . .â He tailed off and looked across at the door.
I glanced round too, expecting to see Hester, but it was Peter Filton peering in myopically.
âMr Pilning . . .?â
âWhat is it, Peter?â
âCan I speak to you, please?â
âBy all means, come in and fire away.â
Filton hesitated, obviously wanting to see him alone, but Pilning just waited, so he came in.
âI think weâve had another break-in, Mr Pilning.â
âNot again! Are you sure?â
Westerleigh shot me a glance.
âWell, the lock on the cupboard where I keep my discs is broken, and Carlo saysââ
âI think weâd better go and have a look,â said Westerleigh, standing up. He made for the door and the other two followed.
âWhat was all that about?â demanded Sinclair when theyâd gone.
I told him and he grunted.
âFilton letting his imagination run away with him again, I expect.â
The door opened and this time it was Hester. She smiled at me, helped herself to coffee and sat down next to me. âDid you sleep well?â she asked.
I smiled back at her. âWhy is everyone so concerned about my sleep?â
âAre they?â
âWell, the Director was. As I told him, like a log, thanks.â âGood.â
âAnd you, how did you sleep?â
âI went out the moment my head touched the pillow. It must have been all that wine.â She lowered her voice. âI hope I didnât bore you last night with all my talk.â
âNot at all. I enjoyed it.â
âHmm. I donât usually talk that much.â
âThen it must have made a pleasant change for you.â âIâm not quite sure how to take that.â
âTake it in a nice way.â I paused. âIs there any chance you could spare me some time today? To carry on from where we left off yesterday.â
âPossibly, weâre not quite so busy today. Make it this morning if you like.â
âAfter weâve had coffee?â
âWhy not? Talking of coffeeââ she looked aroundââit seems rather empty in here this morning.â
âPilning and the Director are down in the basement with Filton. He seems to think somebody broke in last night.â
âOh, not the chapel again!â she said in disgust.
âI donât know.â I paused. âPilning said something about it having happened before. Was this recently?â
âNo, it was last year, September I think. We all hoped it was an isolated occasion.â
âWhat happened, exactly?â
âIt wasnât very nice.â She hesitated. âIt was a necrophiliac.â âHow revolting. I didnât realize they actually existed.â âOh yes. Unbeknown to us, the main mortuary in the city had been having problems and had increased their security.
