CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Penny
âYou just left?â Juliana says.
I cradle my hands around my mug of coffee, blowing on the rising steam. The office is filled with bustling noise beyond the break room, but weâre alone, free to discuss yesterdayâs date.
Iâve filled Juliana in, including revealing Iâm a virgin.
âYes.â I swallow. âI warned him before I did it, so it wasnât a complete dick move.â
Juliana frowns. âAnd let me guess⦠you spent the rest of the night wondering what he thinks, what he wouldâve said?â
I laugh grimly. âYeah.â
âAnd I bet you checked your phone about a hundred times.â
I nod. Thatâs probably an understatement. After explaining to Casey what happened, she told me to call him so I didnât have to suffer the suspense. But he didnât text or call me all night, so all I could do was lay there and let my mind fill with all the horrible possibilities.
âI shouldnât have told him that way,â I murmur. âMaybe I shouldnât have told him at all. But after what we didâ¦â
I didnât go into detail about the way his hand bewitched me, sliding up between my legs and pressing down hard, possessively, until I felt like I had no choice but to melt for him. That moment is just for us, but I did fill Juliana in on some of what happened.
âYou thought heâd want to take it further.â
âExactly.â
âAnd you donât want that?â
I shake my head, but not as a no to her question.
Itâs more like Iâm shaking my head against the very concept I couldnât want Preston Packer. Itâs that I want him too much, even dreaming up scenarios where Iâm pregnant after our first time together.
âI donât want to rush into something before he knows all the facts,â I say softly. âImagine if weâd gone back to a hotel room together, or his place⦠and then he found out.â
âYou donât have to do anything you donât want to, Penny. Just because heâs a celebrity. Just because heâs older than you. It doesnât meanâ¦â
I cringe, anger flaring inside of me. My first instinct is to snap at her to mind her own business, which is insanely unfair. She doesnât know about the need swirling around inside me every single moment, how my thoughts stray relentlessly toward him, how it never stops.
âI know that,â I say quietly. âI do want to take things further. Last night was amazing⦠while it lasted. We didnât just have fun. We talked about real stuff. I even talked about my dad. I never do that. And he told me a little about his childhood.â
I remember the dark look that came into his eyes when he spoke about his dad, but events spiraled before I had a chance to follow up.
âSo what are you going to do?â Juliana asks. âDo you want another date?â
âHe said we were going to have one. But that was before I dropped the V-bomb. Maybe itâs changed his mind. And that would be for the best, right? That would mean I know, at least.
