Mounted Infantry skirmishing ahead of the main force in the Kassassin area.

With the Mounted Infantry joining in a final cavalry charge, the camp at Mahsama was quickly captured, yielding a haul of seven Krupp guns, stores, camp equipment, large numbers of Remington rifles and plentiful ammunition, plus a provisions-train of 75 railway wagons. One train escaped – having steam raised when the cavalry charged the station, it pulled out with Dragoons in hot pursuit, firing from the saddle at the engine-driver who crouched in his cab and escaped being hit; the train gradually drew away and the mortified cavalry eventually brought their panting horses to a standstill, and shook their fists at the departing train.

The village of Tel el-Maskhuta was deserted and the infantry went into camp there, with a battalion of Guards going on to Mahsama. On this day, 25 August, the Bengal Lancers, 19th Hussars and the artillery of the India Contingent, now coming up from Suez, made their disembarkation at Ismailia.

Commanded by Raschid Pasha, the Egyptian force defending the Mahsama – Tel el-Maskhuta area consisted of ten battalions of infantry, totalling 8,000 men; six squadrons of cavalry; 20 guns; and a large force of Bedouin.
