A few weeks had passed. The house was looking like new. Elizabeth could not believe the amount of work that George and Harry had put into the house. She was delighted with them both. Everything was pristine. The floors were beautiful and had been varnished. There was no rotten wood to be seen any more in the master bedroom.

Stanley, who had been rather rude to George and Harry in the beginning, was now delighted to see how happy his mother was with the house. George and Harry stood proud. George had helped his friend fix up the house so that it could be sold and Elizabeth and the children could move away into the countryside to escape the inevitable war that was coming their way. George had to get back to Birmingham where he had been staying with his Aunt Rachel. He now had to make sure that his own family was safe.

“Harry, I am going to have to head back to Birmingham. I am worried about Aunt Rachel and Uncle James. I need to make sure they are okay. Harry paused and rubbed his chin. He looked at George and nodded.

“I understand George, I shall come with you. I will have to see how my father is coping.” Harry felt emotional. He did not want to leave Elizabeth, but he had to go back with George. He had his responsibilities; they both had work and their own families to take care of. Harry had to say his goodbyes for now. He was never going to be away for long.

George and Harry started to pack their possessions ready for the long journey back to Birmingham. Harry paused as he was packing away his clothes. He could see Stanley playing outside in the garden playing with his wooden toys. Harry smiled. He could see how oblivious Stanley was to the world events that were happening around him. He grabbed his suitcase and followed George down the stairs where they both bumped into Elizabeth.

“George, Harry, I cannot thank you enough for everything you have done. The house is truly incredible.” Harry stepped forward and placed his suitcase down on the floor. He reached forward and embraced Elizabeth in a cuddle.

“It is only goodbye for now. I will come and see you again. Please write to me so I know where you have moved to once the house has been sold.” Elizabeth had her eyes closed, savouring the warm embrace from the hug that Harry was giving her.

“Of course, I will, she whispered into Harry’s ear. George watched on. He was so happy for Harry, that he had managed to help Elizabeth overcome the damp, rotten house and to give her hope that she could move away from London and be safe with the children.

As Harry picked up his suitcase, Elizabeth turned her attention to George. She gave him a gentle smile and took his hand.

“Thank you for all your help young man, you are incredibly kind, caring and thoughtful. I wish you all the best and you are more than welcome to come back and visit any time you wish.
