“Amanda Stoll?”

“Speaking,” I said.

* * *

“I am calling from St. Anne’s Infirmary. We had Laura Smith brought in here twenty minutes ago, and she is not in a good state.”

“Twenty minutes ago? I was just with her. What happened?”

* * *

“You are her emergency contact. Your name was the only thing she was able to say. I think she wants you down there.”

* * *

“I’m on my way,” I said.

When I get to the room, I hesitated. I almost don’t recognize Laura in the bed. Her left eye is bulging and blue. It is stuck shut by the looks of it, and her other one is closed. There is no bruise around that eye, but there is a cut above it. There is dried blood below her nose, and I can’t tell if it is from a nose bleed or from cuts. Her lip is swollen to almost double the size too, and I winced at how painful it looks. There are bruises and cuts on her cheek too.
