Adam

He excused himself from the party when Kennedy called and had remained on the phone with her for an entire two hours before her yawning interrupted nearly every word either of them spoke. He laughed and they did a little dance on who would hang up first. Adam felt like he was living his pre-teens all over again. He remembered when girls suddenly became interesting; when he’d call their house phones and ask to speak with them just to sit in silence and then argue over who was going to hang up first. He didn’t want to compare whatever he had with Kennedy with his first love at fifteen, but the innocence of it all felt similar.

When they finally hung up, Adam found himself spinning with possibility. She had done nothing but reject him because of their professional ties since the wedding, but tonight she opened the door to her heart just a millimeter and it was just enough for him to slide in and make himself at home. In a trance, he wandered through the bustling party and up the stairs to his room. “Sounds good man, thanks so much. Key still under the frog out front?” he asked.

“Not after the break-in we had a few months ago. Just go in through the garage. The code is 0810.”

Adam nodded his head, reciting the numbers back and forth in his mind. “Perfect. Thanks again, Eagle. I’ll be out first thing in the morning, I just need some time to think away from the party house.”

“I totally get it. Let me know if you need anything.”

The phone clicked as they ended the call together. He wished he could call his big brother. He wished things weren’t weird between them, but ever since he left Otsego, things were different. He wasn’t the same Nav that was always there for him. He wasn’t the same Nav that watched over him like a protective father figure. He was just… Nav. Distant, cold, and unwelcoming. He sighed heavily and grabbed his duffle out of his closet, shoving a few changes of clothes and his toiletries into it. He considered taking Nav’s car out to the lake, but was craving something more free. He grabbed the small
