Chapter 39
March 11, 1933 â Chancellorâs Residence â Berlin
German Chancellor Adolph Hitler pushed the half-finished plate of roasted beef, boiled potatoes and yellow beans away, quickly wiping his mouth on a napkin. Tossing the napkin in the center of his empty plate, he slid his chair back from the head of the dining room table and glanced at Joseph Goebbels, seated to his right. Goebbels bird-like eating habits matched his less than manly appearance and Adolph Hitler was amused that the little man had barely touched his food. A slow eater himself, Hitler always felt like a pig at a slop trough when dining with his refined minister of propaganda. On the opposite extreme however, was the man seated to his left, recently appointed air minister and President of the Reichstag, Hermann Goering. Goering had not only finished the main course well before his two dinner companions, but was already digging hungrily into a second helping of apple pie.
âHerr Goebbels.â Hitler said. Smiling and leaning back to lace his fingers over his full belly.
âI must tip my hat to your extraordinary accomplishments these past few months. You have set the stage for the next phase and I salute you my friend.â
Glancing up, Goebbels smiled appreciatively at the beaming chancellor.
âThank you, my chancellor. He said. âBut there is still much to do.â The dark-eyed man said, slipping a single yellow bean into his mouth.
On the other side of the table, Hermann Goering stuffed the last of his pie into his mouth and grunted a few times while nodding his large head. His customary way of joining a conversation without really being part of it, whenever food was present, Hitler was instantly repulsed by the large manâs guttural noises. Shooting the Reichstag President and air minister a withering glance, Goering was far too engrossed in chasing stray pie crumbs around his plate to even notice the chancellorâs ire.
âThe Jewish matter has proven more difficult than we anticipated.â Goebbels said, sensing Hitlerâs darkening mood and trying to divert his often-volcanic temper away from Goering.
âOur boycott of Jew businesses has mostly failed because most Berlinerâs seemed to have ignored it. Still, we have all but eliminated the communist opposition and the Red Front is in serious disarray.â Goebbels said, staring down at his plate.
Goebbels conversation rerouting seemed to work because Hitler leapt suddenly to his feet and clapped his hands loudly, mildly startling both guests. Circling around behind his dinner chair, Hitler chortled.
âThat my friends, is perhaps the most significant thing to occur in Germany since this great republic was formed. All of our other gains in the past pale in comparison to the destruction of the communist party, perhaps, next to the Jews, the greatest enemy of the Fatherland.â
Folding his arms behind his back, Hitler turned away from his audience of two and cocked his head upward as if addressing the heavens.
âThe communists and Jews, have historically been the greatest obstacle to the decontamination of our beautiful German homeland. Neither the social democrats,
