HERBAL SITZ BATH TEA

Like the other recipes for herbal infusions, you do not necessarily need to have every ingredient on this list in order to make a healing sitz bath tea. And likewise, if you do a simple Google search there are more herbs than these that you can use if you prefer!

INGREDIENTS

1 Tbsp comfrey (Traditionally to aid in wound healing, particularly in protecting against the incorrect development of scar tissue. This herb can be used as “herbal stitches” for minor tears and lacerations that occur during vaginal birth, but use caution on very deep wounds, as the external application can cause the outside of the tissue to heal first before the wound has healed deeper internally.)

1 Tbsp witch hazel (A natural astringent, this herb is soothing and anti-inflammatory, which can reduce swelling while healing, treat hemorrhoids, and provide comfort to the vulva when used as a compress.)

1 Tbsp yarrow (Known to stop bleeding in wounds and treat hemorrhoids. It also decreases risk of infection.)

1 Tbsp horsetail (Horsetail can be used both topically and internally [see Nutritious Herbal Infusion for Postpartum Healing, page 120] to help promote healing, particularly if you experienced perineal or vulval tears during birth, or a Cesarean birth. Horsetail is high in silica, which is helpful in the production and repair of connective tissues, which can accelerate healing.)

1 Tbsp plantain leaf (See Soothing Belly Rub, page 86, for how to gather plantain leaf and more ways to prepare them. I have used plantain leaf, my favorite herb as a parent, for everything from cracked and blistered nipples to minor burns, cuts and scrapes, diaper rash, bug bites, and eczema. During postpartum, this herb shines in helping soothe and heal tears, discomfort, and inflammation after birth. It is naturally antiseptic, which helps prevent infection at the site of the tear. As a bonus, plantain commonly grows wild in the Northern Hemisphere, which makes accessing your own for free relatively easy, depending on where you live. It is not endangered and is often treated like a weed by folks who don’t know how useful it is.)

1 Tbsp calendula (Calendula flowers are antifungal, antibacterial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory, which makes them perfect to aid in healing the perineum after birth while reducing the risk of infection. Calendula flowers can be made into a salve and used for sore nipples and diaper rash too!)

1 Tbsp lavender (Not only does it smell amazing and have a calming effect on the nervous system, it can also help heal irritated skin with its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.)

1 Tbsp rose petals (Rose petals smell amazing and will be soothing every time you use your sitz bath tea, but they are also astringent, which can help tonify the skin.)

1 Tbsp sea salt (Natural sea salt is healing and cleansing. You can also use Epsom salts, just make sure it’s not the kind that has any fragrance or oils in it.)
