I peered out the window on the way. No serial bomber, no skin head, no worries. But I still couldn’t believe I was willingly headed Back-to-the-Beyond—I looked out the window to keep from getting car sick. The curves became curvier and the canopy heavier the deeper we drove.

But a good story surpasses all, and I was sure one awaited me at the end of the road. I had recently read about an odd icon on a Murphy hilltop. It was something normally found not in the cool claustrophobic mountains but in the sweltering wide-open desert.

Murphy was home to the Murphy Pyramid.
