Chapter Forty-Seven

The following night, Mae waited for Elizabeth to hang up her apron, pick up her knitting, and join the rest of them at the fire. With everyone together, she felt it was finally time to broach the subject to the Foxes. “So, I was thinking…since tomorrow’s Sunday, our day of rest, I thought we could show you the cave. You know, the one we came from. Maybe pack a picnic lunch.”

Jack looked up from sharpening his ax, handling it carefully like it was a newborn baby. “Ja, I soppose we can do dat. Den you vill stop all dis nonsense of de futore?” He ran his finger across the newly sharpened blade. “Lizzie, you vill come?”

Elizabeth paused her knitting. “Well, if you want, I will go. I can’t help but be curious about this story they told us.”

“Sounds good to me.” Dexter leaned back in his chair.

“Let’s do it.” Toke held out his fist for anyone to bump it.

Mae’s mood lifted. “Then it’s a plan.”

Toke patiently waited while his fist hung suspended in the air. “It’s going to just stay like this until it gets the love.”

“Willie, you’re up,” Mae said.
