Summer 1968

“So…?”

“What?” Traf ignored Michaela, swinging chairs up and over, perching them on tables in preparation for sweeping the floor. “Lock the windows, will you?”

Michaela closed and locked every window of the clubhouse, then grabbed a broom from behind the bar and started sweeping, scrutinizing Traf. “You know what I’m asking. Did you do her?”

“Do her?” Traf shook her head, carrying the last few dirty dishes behind the counter and depositing them in a basin of warm soapy water. “Do you ‘do’ Gabriela?”

“Every chance I get!”

The young butches guffawed.

“Are you asking if I had sex with Carmen?” Traf washed a glass, leveling a stare at Michaela.

“Well?”

Traf rolled down her sleeves leaving the last of the dishes to air dry. “That’s none of your business.” Having just completed her shift at Troublemakers on her first Friday night back, she leaned against the wall waiting for her ride home to finish sweeping.

Michaela mutely emptied the dustpan in a trashcan behind the bar. Putting away the broom, she considered Traf carefully before saying, “Well, did you make ‘free love’ with your flamenco gypsy girlfriend?” She tried a new American term, a phrase the hippies used.

Traf nodded her head enthusiastically. “That I did.” She danced an impromptu few steps before twirling around on one toe. “My beautiful Spanish lover, Carmencita, opened up a whole new world for me, buddy, let me tell you.”

“That’s what I’ve been wanting you to do, so okay already, let’s hear it.” Michaela flipped the electric switch wired to the wall and the clubhouse plunged into darkness as Traf opened the front door for them to leave. “Tell me everything!”

After locking up Troublemakers, they walked toward Michaela’s blue VW bug. The rolling surf sounded loud in the warm night air. Smoking as they sat companionably in the car, they rolled down the windows and watched dark waves barely lit under a sliver of moon. “I told Carmen I loved her.”

“You did what?” Michaela’s screech could be heard out at sea.

“I meant it.” Traf sighed.

“You’ve only been single for a couple of months. She lives in another country. What do you mean, you love her?”

“It fell out of my mouth on my last day there. We were naked,” Traf wiggled her eyebrow, “lying on her bed in broad daylight catching our breath after…” she grinned at Michaela, “…after she used a chuckie on me.” She laughed at her friend’s disappointed expression. “What? You asked.”

“I don’t know which shocks me least, that you were naked or that you were on the receiving end of chuckie.” Michaela shook her head in mock sadness. “I thought you were going to tell me something really good.”

“Wait, what?” Traf tossed her cigarette butt out the window. “You don’t find that scandalous?” She certainly had.

“You’re a prude,” said Michaela simply. “Gabriela and I take turns using chuckie on each other, we have for years.”

“You have?” Traf couldn’t believe her ears. “What about lying around naked together, when it’s not even dark?” Traf lowered her voice to a whisper.
