âSoâ¦?â
âWhat?â Traf ignored Michaela, swinging chairs up and over, perching them on tables in preparation for sweeping the floor. âLock the windows, will you?â
Michaela closed and locked every window of the clubhouse, then grabbed a broom from behind the bar and started sweeping, scrutinizing Traf. âYou know what Iâm asking. Did you do her?â
âDo her?â Traf shook her head, carrying the last few dirty dishes behind the counter and depositing them in a basin of warm soapy water. âDo you âdoâ Gabriela?â
âEvery chance I get!â
The young butches guffawed.
âAre you asking if I had sex with Carmen?â Traf washed a glass, leveling a stare at Michaela.
âWell?â
Traf rolled down her sleeves leaving the last of the dishes to air dry. âThatâs none of your business.â Having just completed her shift at Troublemakers on her first Friday night back, she leaned against the wall waiting for her ride home to finish sweeping.
Michaela mutely emptied the dustpan in a trashcan behind the bar. Putting away the broom, she considered Traf carefully before saying, âWell, did you make âfree loveâ with your flamenco gypsy girlfriend?â She tried a new American term, a phrase the hippies used.
Traf nodded her head enthusiastically. âThat I did.â She danced an impromptu few steps before twirling around on one toe. âMy beautiful Spanish lover, Carmencita, opened up a whole new world for me, buddy, let me tell you.â
âThatâs what Iâve been wanting you to do, so okay already, letâs hear it.â Michaela flipped the electric switch wired to the wall and the clubhouse plunged into darkness as Traf opened the front door for them to leave. âTell me everything!â
After locking up Troublemakers, they walked toward Michaelaâs blue VW bug. The rolling surf sounded loud in the warm night air. Smoking as they sat companionably in the car, they rolled down the windows and watched dark waves barely lit under a sliver of moon. âI told Carmen I loved her.â
âYou did what?â Michaelaâs screech could be heard out at sea.
âI meant it.â Traf sighed.
âYouâve only been single for a couple of months. She lives in another country. What do you mean, you love her?â
âIt fell out of my mouth on my last day there. We were naked,â Traf wiggled her eyebrow, âlying on her bed in broad daylight catching our breath afterâ¦â she grinned at Michaela, ââ¦after she used a chuckie on me.â She laughed at her friendâs disappointed expression. âWhat? You asked.â
âI donât know which shocks me least, that you were naked or that you were on the receiving end of chuckie.â Michaela shook her head in mock sadness. âI thought you were going to tell me something really good.â
âWait, what?â Traf tossed her cigarette butt out the window. âYou donât find that scandalous?â She certainly had.
âYouâre a prude,â said Michaela simply. âGabriela and I take turns using chuckie on each other, we have for years.â
âYou have?â Traf couldnât believe her ears. âWhat about lying around naked together, when itâs not even dark?â Traf lowered her voice to a whisper.
