Chapter 15

RICHARD HELD Eric tightly, determined not to let go until Eric was ready for him to, but eventually he’d have to deal with the condom. Not yet, though. Right now he had more important things to focus on, like kissing the top of Eric’s head and making sure he was comfortable. Eric didn’t show any signs of moving anytime soon, so Richard resigned himself to being sticky. He shifted Eric’s weight—still less than it should have been—to rest more comfortably on his chest and simply breathed.

Peace.

He hadn’t known a lot of it in his life, with all the moving around they’d done as the Navy shipped his father from one base to another. He’d seen more of the world by the time he was eighteen than most people saw in their entire lives, and that was before he’d joined up and shipped out himself. He’d seen action in both wars in Iraq as well as in the intervening war on terrorism. When he’d left the Navy, he’d continued to work with military operations. No, he’d never lived a peaceful life. He fucked as hard as he fought, and his connection with Dav had been the only thing that kept him sane through much of his adult life. There had been moments of beauty amid the horrors they had seen—their commitment ceremony on a beach in Tahiti with the sea they both loved as their only witness; the first time they’d watched Eric fire his bow; the baptism of Dav’s niece with his family including Richard into the fold as if they couldn’t imagine him not being there—as well as smaller moments of quiet contentment, but they were few and far between.

Even with Dav still unconscious in the hospital, Richard knew this moment would be forever added to that list of precious memories. Eric had slotted into their lives easily, but Richard had always been so sure Eric was really just there for Dav. He hadn’t felt that way today, even with his own blundering through a routine Dav would have known. Eric hadn’t looked at him like a substitute. Eric had looked at him like a knight in shining armor come to save him.

Eric shifted against his chest and lifted his head. “If I sleep any more now, I won’t sleep tonight.”

“Then get your scrawny ass out of bed.” Richard gave Eric’s butt an appreciative squeeze to soften his words. “You need to eat anyway.”

“You were all over my scrawny ass an hour ago,” Eric retorted.

“And I’ll be all over it again every chance I get,” Richard replied. “But you still need to eat. And I have something for you.”

“Presents?” Eric asked, sitting up with an eager look on his face.

Richard swatted his hip. “Yes, but only after you let me clean up and we eat something.”

Eric leaned into Richard’s hand, reminding Richard again how much care Eric still needed. He knew how to give it to him now, though. No more making things worse out of ignorance. “Do you want another shower?”

“Will you fuck me against the wall again?”

Richard snorted.
