A Long and Profitable Innings

Arthur Ransome writing in the Manchester Guardian in 1927. He was right, but premature by a quarter of a century.

It seems to be generally recognized by all but a few die-hards in Shanghai that the time has come when a change in the relations between British and Chinese is inevitable. It is, of course, hard not to sympathize with those Englishmen who have grown accustomed to the established ways and now look forward rather gloomily to life in a Chinese world very unlike the old. It is easy to understand the pained surprise of businessmen who have for years been able to count on Chinese labour at a stable wage, low in comparison with wages at home, at finding themselves face to face with trade unions which have yet to learn the difference between extravagant and economically justifiable demands. At the same time, one can but feel that they have had a long and profitable innings … They have been jerked in a few months from the Victorian era to the present day.
