Travis wasn’t sure how long he searched that afternoon but he knew it was a long time. He’d snuck around the school grounds during the last two classes, in order to avoid any campus supervisors, and then continued his search after school ended. He went through the art department’s storage room, checking behind costumes and big theater displays. He scoured through painted canvases and jugs of paint and glue. He pulled out heavy boxes and moved around old furniture. Tired and sweaty, he sat on the floor after realizing the Mechanical Sunman wasn’t there, either.

Art department: check.

After that he headed to the gym’s storage area, which was close by in the school auditorium. He found the door unlocked and he shuffled through old jerseys and boxes of deflated basketballs. He found some plastic activity cones, Hula-Hoops, and extra chairs and tables. A pile of activity binders were stacked on the floor. A loudspeaker and microphone were stored in there for the principal to speak to students when they gathered for assemblies. But still there was no sign of the unfinished automaton device. So he marked the two storage areas off his list and thought he’d better head home to see his dad. He could be wondering where he was by now.

He rushed to get home as the day had already darkened to evening and a cold wind was blowing leaves across his path. But when he got home, his dad’s truck wasn’t in the driveway and the house was still dark.

Travis walked into the living room and checked to see if his dad had made any progress on his woodshop project.

Somehow, the Mechanical Sunman was halfway complete!

He stopped in front of it, studying the structure. The boxed cabinet was completely put together. The doors had yet to be put on and it wasn’t yet sanded and stained. The Sunman had yet to be built. There was a chunk of wood sitting at the table, waiting to be carved and painted.

“Amazing,” he said in awe. “Dad, how did you manage to make so much progress so quickly?” Dad must have been working on it all night long, he realized.

Travis had a twinge of guilt that he hadn’t been there to help him. He was torn between helping the ghost and spending time with his dad, when Travis had asked for his dad’s help on the project in the first place.

But the thing was, Travis had also been asked for help and he was doing his best to fulfill the request.

That evening after Dad finally got home, they had dad’s favorite dinner of chili and a slice of toasted bread. Travis was distracted and his dad seemed to be, too. They barely talked. Travis wanted to thank him for all the work he’d done on the Mechanical Sunman but since Dad wasn’t saying much, he didn’t, either.

He must be upset with him, Travis realized. When his dad was disappointed, he sometimes gave Travis the silent treatment until he wasn’t that upset anymore.

Travis felt guilty for upsetting his dad.
