Chapter 14

Dawn was breaking and the orange-red sky of morning had already begun to cast long shadows by the time Michael made it back to the English army encampment. He told his commander the French had taken him prisoner after an enemy soldier had knocked him unconscious during a skirmish. It seemed prudent to omit certain other details of the ordeal. He reported instead that one of the French nurses had taken a liking to him and had assisted his escape.

His comrades enthusiastically welcomed him back, all the while joking that he must have deliberately allowed the enemy to capture him just so he could meet a pretty French nurse. He ate a large breakfast, and because of his nocturnal escapade, his commander permitted him to rest for several hours.

Early in the afternoon, someone nudging him in the ribs with the toe of their boot woke him from a deep sleep.

"Michael. Wake up," said a voice.

"Hmmmpphh."

Now this same someone shook him by the shoulder. "Michael! Wake up! The Prince wants to see you."

"Freddy? Is that you? Go away. I'm trying to get a little kip," Michael complained. He rolled away from his friend, and pulled the coat he had been using as a pillow over his head.

"Michael! Seriously, Prince Edward wants to see you right away!"

"That's enough Freddy! Stop shaking me already."
