Chapter Ten

He started them off at a steady pace, which turned quickly brisk once they left the uneven ground of the savanna. Not once did he speak, nor did he stop to study the vegetation or smell the proverbial roses.

The soldier in him had a target in mind with the prize being her body beneath his, open and yielding, hot and welcoming.

It wasn’t love, of course, but Ariel reveled in his desire of her, his promise of all through the night.

She would make certain he kept that pledge and that his strong embrace imprisoned her from dusk to dawn. That he used her in a way no man had ever done before, greedily and tenderly, until all doubt of what the future might, or might not, bring was forgotten, at least until he left.

She didn’t want to think of that now.

Today, this very moment, she was his woman, and so Ariel followed rather than led, content in Cole’s new role as their guide. A role he seemed well prepared for as he used various survival techniques and his overwhelming need to keep them on course.

Good, good boy.

At last, though, Ariel knew he was testing the limits of his endurance, just as all men did, so she started to hold back.

Cole didn’t appear to notice until they had gone another eighth of a mile and he was yards and yards ahead of her. At last, he stopped, glanced over his shoulder and shouted, “Am I going too fast for you?”

Now, there was a question. They had met less than seventy-two hours before, she had already been blessed with seeing him nude, they had spent their first night in the wild sleeping in each other’s arms, they had kissed like kids that found the experience completely new and exciting, he had secured her promise that they would make love tonight—or in his words, all through the night—and now he was hell-bent on getting to that waterfall so both their desires could be met.

“I was about to ask you the same,” said Ariel as she joined him. “I’ll slow down even more if you need to rest.”

Cole’s expression said she was nuts. “Do I look like I need to rest?”

He looked like a male in his prime. Despite the previous pace, he hadn’t even broken a sweat, he wasn’t breathing all that hard now, his eyes were clear, his beginning beard and tousled hair were oh-so-rugged, and his body—mmmm, his body—a shiver of delight tore through Ariel as she recalled its male power and beauty. “Actually, you look aroused.”

He grinned.

“But you also sound hungry. Hold these, please.”

He took the bamboo stick and script from her. Reaching over, Ariel gently tapped his flat belly as it continued to loudly growl. “You should eat.”

Cole looked down as that tapping turned to gentle strokes. “I fully intend to. Later.”

Mmmm. She would make certain he also kept that promise. “That’s good to hear, but I’m talking about food. And now, not later,” she insisted, then quickly added to his protests, “You need to keep up your strength so you can keep up with me.
