Each effect also has its own set of controls including:

Gain: Same as above, but you can set how much sound reaches each individual effect, and how much exits it.

Editor: This brings up a floating window where you can change the actual settings for a given effect.

Bypass: This allows you to shut off a given effect without deleting it or altering its settings.

Let me walk through the reasoning behind each effect shown in Figure 35:

Declipper: This limiter tries to keep overly loud sounds out of your recordings. Loud sounds can introduce distortion; on some analog equipment this distortion can be pleasing and musical, but in the digital environment it is invariably harsh and unpleasant. Declipper is part of Steve Harris’s free LADSPA plug-ins; it comes with Audio Hijack Pro.

AUMultibandCompressor: The compressor brings the loud and soft portions of a sound closer to a more even level, and can apply different settings to different frequency bands (like bass, mids, and highs). It has the counterintuitive effect of making a voice sound more expansive and rich. This plug-in is included with OS X and uses Apple’s own audio processing architecture called Audio Units (hence the AU at the start of the name).

Reverb: I add just a touch of reverb so that my voice doesn’t sound flat and dry. Unless you want to sound like you record your podcast in a cathedral, a little reverb goes a long way. This particular reverb effect comes with Audio Hijack Pro.

Application mixers: If you want to fly by the seat of your pants and record live, you can use Application Mixers to bring in sounds from other apps while recording. For this example, I have QuickTime Player and iTunes set up. While I record my voice, I can play something in either app and that audio will be included in the recording. (To record from Skype, FaceTime, or Messages, there is a better way; see Record with Audio Hijack Pro)
