Chapter Seven
Karin dropped into the deck chair beside Sten.
She tapped his shoulder with a tall cold one. Sten took it, had a long sip and stared at the new moon, thinking how lucky he was to have such a great sister.
But then she had to go and ruin it by talking. âDonât tell me youâre in the dog house with Americaâs Darling again.â
âFine. I wonât tell you.â
Karin gave him a look, like he was just such a chucklehead. âPut yourself out of your misery. Go say youâre sorry.â
âDrop it.â
âStennie, itâs time you learned to love again.â She said it so sweetly.
And that made it hurt even moreâenough that he opened his big mouth and said, âYeah, well, itâs time you started taking your own advice.â The words got out before he made himself stop them.
And Karin knew exactly what he meant by themâor at least, she suspected. She took a long pull off her ginger beer and then asked, âWhat are you getting at?â
He tried to backpedal. âItâs not my business. Sorry.â
âJust say it. Please.â
And then he turned and looked at her and, well, he never had liked lying much. âLast night, when you got home...â He explained about hearing voices, and that he and Madison had gone outside to see what was up. âWe saw you with Liam Bravo.â
âUgh.â She drank more fake beer. âItâs complicated.â
Now that heâd gone and put his foot in it, he at least had to offer, âYou want to talk about it?â
âUm, no.â
He felt relief that she wasnât going to unburden herself to him, which probably made him a terrible brother. âWell, Iâm ready to listen if you ever do.â
âThanksâbut like I said, no. Liam did tell me, though, the real reason Madisonâs here in town.â She leaned her head back and watched the wisps of clouds high above, like smoke trails in the dark sky. âShe looks like the Bravos. I probably should have guessedâand donât worry. I wonât say anything to anyone. I havenât forgotten that sheâs trying not to let the world know sheâs hereâand anyway, who would I tell?â
They gazed out at the ocean together until he asked, âSo whereâs my quote from Scarlett OâHara?â
âSorry.â She set her half-empty bottle on the little table between them and gathered her legs up onto the chair. âScarlettâs got nothing worthwhile to say tonight.â
