Remember that your values are general principles that give meaning to your life. They are also what keep you grounded and able to keep going when times get tough.

Getting to know your true self

As you move from being a child, to a teenager, to an adult, your beliefs and values become incorporated into a fundamental sense of who you are and where you fit in the greater scheme of life: your “true self.” When you ask yourself the critical question, “Who am I?” you must never forget the social and cultural context that has forged you. Your beliefs and values reflect your accumulated biases. Many come from our immediate family and our community, in fact it is typically these beliefs that come to play a disproportionate role in determining who we are. Our political beliefs are among the most difficult to change, and if we are confronted with an opposing view a defense network in our brain fires up to resist working out the implications of a new perspective.4 This is important for helping to keep our minds open and flexible. As a belief grows stronger and deeper it becomes less and less likely that we will keep our minds open to alternative realities, and more and more likely that we will give priority to information that fits with what we believe. This is “confirmation bias,” so we are drawn to information that fits, rather than challenges, our worldview.5
