Easton

Thank goodness for the gift shop at the trail's end, a perfect excuse to escape. My brother's texts and missed calls had been stacking up like a virtual tower of urgency on my phone. I needed a moment alone, a sliver of solitude, to return his call.

“Josh, what’s wrong? I was tied up,” I said when he answered.

“She's slapped me with an order of protection, Easton. Can you believe that? Now there's a two-hundred-foot invisible barrier between me and my own kids.”

He sounded shattered.

I sighed, rubbed a hand over my eyes. This had been going on for a while. “Tell me what happened. I know how she is, but judges don’t go around handing out restraining orders for no reason.”

“She didn’t let me have them on Thursday. I was fine, I said okay, let me have them Friday night. She said that Danny had a birthday party to go to. I said I’d drop him off there and take Leah bowling or something. She refused. So I showed up at the house to see the kids, tell them I wanted to see them as soon as I could, tell Danny to have a good time at the laser tag party and all that. She freaks out, locks the doors and when I try the garage entry code—which she changed, by the way, she calls the cops. It was total bullshit.”

“So she told you the kids were busy and you tried to get in the house,” I said wearily.

I knew he was frustrated, but he wasn’t thinking straight. He’d always had trouble regulating his emotions ever since we were kids. I spent a lot of time and energy trying to manage his reactions for years. It was one of the reasons I stayed out of long term relationships—all the drama. I had stood by and supported my brother while his marriage fell apart and I’d borne the brunt of his misery and anger and despair. Those were not things I wanted in my life if I could avoid them.

“Remember what the social worker told you last time?” I prompted, patiently as I could.

“That if she refuses to let me see them, I should write it down and keep a log. Once it’s been two weeks I call the lawyer,” he muttered.

“If you’d gone through proper channels—God, Josh, you just make things harder for yourself in the long run when you overreact.”

“Overreact? Those are my kids, Easton. It’s not business. It’s not about staying calm. I’m fighting for my family!” he said.

“Josh, hear me out. You've got to steer clear of her—no calls, no texts, and definitely no drive-bys at her place. Just... hit pause, regain your cool. Trouble's the last thing you need. Let me talk to my lawyer, see what strings I can pull.”

“Look, I don’t like running to you for help, you know that, but I’ve got legal fees up to my ears thanks to that bitch— “

“I’ll do what I can, but you have to stay out of trouble.
