I don’t think too much about Charmaine’s suggestion for several weeks, but she apparently took it to heart that I would come and got her husband to ask his godmother if he could invite me, and now they’re expecting me to come to the Berkshires for two weeks when Congress takes its spring recess and stay with them at their guest cottage on the de Bourgh estate.

Mayor Lucas and Mariah are coming too. Mrs. Lucas will visit at another time. She has no desire to be there at the same time as her ex-husband. Her brother will also wait to visit when she does. His DJ career has really taken off ever since a video of “Sir Willy Yam'' went viral on TikTok. He’s moved to New York City and now works in a popular club there.

I tell Jane about my trip during our weekly call.

“That’s great, Liz, I’m happy for you. You need a vacation. You never take one.” It’s true, I don’t. I can’t remember the last time I took off for anything besides the holidays or went anywhere that wasn’t for work. Mary’s assured me that the office will be in great hands while I’m gone, and I’ve got Dr. Forster overseeing all the PTs and PTAs. They can live without me for two weeks.

“So how are you doing?” I ask Jane.

“Great! Everything’s good, you know. Aunt Melanie and Uncle Ed are so easy to work with, and I love being around our cousins when I’m off.”

“You sound good,” I say, hopeful.

“I am good. I haven’t even thought that much about, well, you-know-who.”

“Voldemort?” I joke.

Jane sputters a laugh. “The other you-know-who. Oh, I did see his sister the other day, though.”

“Carrie?”

“Yeah. I took Mom’s suggestion and messaged her on Instagram. Just on a whim one night, you know. It’s not like I was on her profile looking for pictures of Bingley or anything.”

“Sure.” Sure, Jane, sure.

“Anyway, I guess my fingers must have hit the messenger button or something, because the screen popped up and I saw that she was online, so I thought ‘Why not’? and sent her a message. I was surprised she even replied. We chatted for a while, and I told her about my moving to Rockford, so she said if I ever came up to Chicago, we should do lunch.”

“And then what?” I was devouring this like it was some soap opera.

“So, I said, ‘Yeah, we should totally do that’, and I mentioned that I’d be there the Saturday after next if she was free, and she said she’d have to check her schedule. Then I didn’t hear back from her for a week, so I messaged her again to see if she was free that day. On Friday night she finally wrote back and said that she was pretty swamped, but if I could fit it in to meet her for coffee from 9-9:30, she could see me.”

“So, you had coffee with her?”

“Yeah, although it was pretty short. She got there fifteen minutes late and then had to leave right at 9:30, but we got to talk.
