Trouble In Paradise

Maya

I’ve barely parked and I’m pulling my bags from my car when a voice I’d recognize anywhere calls my name.

“Maya!”

My eyes fly up and I almost swoon when I see Adam standing there. Tall, broad and beaming. Looking like an oasis after days of not seeing him and the long drive from Magnolia Point back to Charleston. I bring my hands to my face, shaking my head, then walk to my guy. Then we’re standing toe-to-toe, drowning into each other’s gazes, stupid, lovesick grins on our faces. Not touching, not kissing or even embracing. Just staring, eating each other up. He finally leans in and takes my mouth in a long, wet kiss, making me go weak in the knees.

“Adam,” is all I can whisper when he lifts his head.

“Hey, baby girl,” he replies, trading my travel bag for a bouquet of white roses.

My eyes grow big and I giggle.

“Shush, I’m courting.”

I laugh harder, as Adam takes hold of my luggage and makes for the stairs up my front porch, throwing over his shoulder, “it’s so fucking good to see you, sweetheart.” A gorgeous grin adorning his handsome face.

I trot behind him, nose buried in my flowers, and answer with a heartfelt, “same, baby.”

Adam shakes his head, chuckling.

“What?” I inquire.

“We’re going to be one of those couples.”

“Which ones?” I can’t contain my wide smile.

“The disgustingly happy ones,” he replies, making me burst with laughter once more.

“Is this how it’s gonna be? Me not lifting a finger?”

He asks in a serious tone, “does your mom carry her own luggage?”

I nod. “Point taken.”

Adam stands in the doorway, hands stuffed in his pockets.

“You’re not coming inside?” I ask.

He shakes his head. “It’s better if I let you rest.”

A mixture of relief and disappointment fills my heart. I feel disgusting from the drive. All I want to do is shower and sleep. But I also missed my guy. So fucking much.

The lingering smile that’s been on my face since I saw him grows up a notch.

“I’m fine, love.”

At the endearment, our eyes grow wide. It came out naturally, but maybe too soon…

“I’m leaving now before I come in and show you just how much I missed you. Call me whenever you’re available. We need to talk.”

“About what?” I ask Adam’s departing form.

“A lot of things,” he replies with a wink before stepping down the stairs.

Oh boy.
