“The officer on your case resigned three months ago.”

World crashes to a stop. Dread fills me to the brim.

“And not one person thought it was prudent to warn the woman who has been stalked for years? How could you guys be so reckless? I thought the police were supposed to be doing their duty instead of playing fucking chess.” My voice rises, and I slam my hand on his desk.

The officer flinches, his eyes going to his left at the other officer sitting doing his own work, oblivious.

“I would love to see what the media has to say about this workplace. Thank you for your help, officer. My review of working with you should reach the newspaper tomorrow morning.” I give him a tight-lipped smile and leave his burning face behind.

I dial Kamari and ask her to give me the number for the company that handles Ruel’s personal security detail. I can’t pay for it, but my husband certainly can.

Instead of going to my office or to the museum venue of my event, I turn my car around and go to Remo’s office.

I need to tell Remo I want my own security, that his guards aren’t enough for me.

I told myself I will drop this little mission if I don’t manage to make him like me and I won’t force it on him.

I reach the doors of his office, and Amina smiles at me. I just want her to hug me. Kamari is away, busy with Ruel’s training and press events for a new game, and I want someone to give me a reassuring hug.

“Remo is in there. You can go right ahead. You have about a good half an hour before his next meeting.”

I nod a thank you to Amina.

Taking a deep breath, I open the door and walk inside to see Remo sitting at his desk, looking through papers. There are many high stacks of paper on his desk. He rubs the back of his neck again before he sees me, and his eyebrows rise.

“Surprise?” I give him a nervous smile.

“What are you doing here?” Remo asks before going back to his work.

“I decided to drop by and see how my husband is doing.” I walk around him until I am standing behind him, then glance down at his papers.

“Numbers. Must be fun. I hate working with numbers, honestly,”

“Hmm…”

I watch him work in silence, looking at papers, writing on some of them, looking at his computer intensely.

“Remo?”

He looks up at me and waits for me to speak.

I open my mouth to ask him if he can maybe hug me because I feel drained and touch starved.

But… I don’t. What if he thinks too much of it? What if he pushes me further away because of how he dislikes his desire for me?

I shut my mouth.

“What is it?” he grumbles, rubbing his shoulder again, and that strained expression pulls at his face.

“I have lavender oil in my bag. You really seem to have pain in your shoulder. It helps me when I sit down for too long.
