My curiosity was peaked now, and I was developing a theory. I wanted to take Wil over to Meryton Candies to see if it triggered some memories, but what if Katherine had been the previous owner? There must be a reason for my aunt’s grudge. She was too focused on destruction to have this be anything else. Not only had she pushed Hailey to open her store here, but she had so much animosity toward the Bennets, and Colin was obviously spying for her. If he couldn’t make his wife a priority, then he didn’t make himself one, either. The only reason he was consulting with the Chamber of Commerce was to do something for Katherine.

I should have realized my aunt was seeking revenge for something as soon as I arrived. Basic market research would suggest that two candy stores, no matter how different, so close together was a bad idea. Never mind that opening a store in a small town an hour away from a major city would be better than in Boston. Katherine knew what she was doing and would have never made such a fundamental mistake. I kept my theory to myself for now but was positive talking this out and reading the book might clarify some information.

“I want to go to Meryton Candies,” I said as we left the bookstore. “I need to talk to Elliot about something.”

“We’ll meet you there,” Wil said. “I want to see this liquor store and get something for dinner.”

I turned to protest. I wanted them to join me so they could see what I’d been ranting about for weeks. Given all the things I needed to say to Elliot, I realized that maybe I shouldn’t walk in with a crowd. Lizbeth took Wil’s hand as they walked down to the liquor store. I turned to my friends to see if they wanted to join me.

Becca shook her head. “I’m exhausted and don’t need to go back.”

Anne nodded in agreement. They had started much earlier than we had, so they decided it was time to go. I walked down to Meryton Candies, thinking about Elliot and how he would appreciate me finally seeing things from his point of view. If my theory was true, I could completely understand Mrs. Bennet’s anxiety and animosity toward me. Whatever happened between them, she knew I was Katherine’s niece and would naturally assume I supported my aunt. My lack of knowledge could easily make it appear that way. My own reactions to her candy probably made everything worse. I might not like the candy, but that would naturally destroy her store without Katherine having to do anything about it.

I also wanted to tell Elliot how I felt. I wanted him to know that seeing him at Thanksgiving made me realize that, however difficult, we could be together and he should move to New York to be with me. He had to see that his mother would never let him help her. He could come to New York, and we could be together if he let go and let his mother’s business fail.
