"You're going to have to reach up higher," Valerie directed, as Cooper stood on the top of the ladder. He had been trying for the last ten minutes to put the illuminated musical star on top of the tree, but it was so full and round that he was afraid he might fall into it.
"You know, I don't need you directing me. Iâve put a star on top of a Christmas tree before." The last few days of working together with Valerie had reminded him just how much they argued when they were dating. He was such a different person now that he couldn't understand what he saw in her in the first place.
"Fine, but when you fall into the Christmas tree, I'm going to make sure to get it on video. Do you know how many views that would get?â
He finally placed the star and climbed down the ladder, thankful that he didn't give her something she could share on social media.
"Thank goodness Travis is coming home soon because he can deal with you the rest of the time you're here," Cooper said, only half joking. Most of the time, he and Valerie spent their time jabbing each other with words. He knew there was some emotion behind the words she was shooting at him, and he let her do it. It was the least he could do after leaving her like he did.
"Good, because I like Travis. But for now, we need to talk about Santaâs workshop. The Santa Claus you hired has decided to cut off his beard and go on a cross-country journey in his newly decked out camper van."
Cooper stopped in his tracks and stared at her. "Youâd better be playing a joke on me."
She crossed her arms and shook her head."I'm not playing a joke on you. While you were up there trying to put the North Star on that Christmas tree, I got a text from him. He said that he had a spiritual awakening during a camping trip recently, and he needs to go âfind himselfâ. So he won't be able to be our Santa Claus."
âHe couldnât wait to âfind himselfâ until after the holidays?â Cooper asked, using air quotes.
âApparently not.â
"Well now what are we supposed to do?"
"All I can tell you is that you better shove a pillow under that shirt and start growing a beard."
He shook his head and waved his hands in front of him. "Oh no. No. Absolutely not. I like children, but I don't want a bunch of them on my lap with their germy little hands and their germy little breath."
She laughed. "I guess itâs a good thing that we didnât get married and have kids. I'm pretty sure all children have germy little hands."
At that moment, Cooper heard a noise in the doorway. He turned around and saw Mia and Kate standing there. Kate's eyes were wide as saucers.
"What do you mean you didnât get married?" she asked, her arms crossed over her chest. âWhy
