Chapter Eight

Dylan was still thinking about Robin’s question the next day.

So then what’s stopping you from finding yours?

He hadn’t had a chance to answer it because Robin’s brother Billy and his three kids had chosen that exact moment to walk into the restaurant. Charlotte Taylor, Eloise’s sister, came inside only a few minutes after them. Billy and Charlotte had dated in high school and had even planned to get married. Dylan wasn’t sure of the details, but they’d broken up and Billy had moved away, gotten married and had kids. Charlotte had moved away, as well, but now both were back in Bronco and both were single. Sort of.

Dylan was pretty sure they were back together, but it was none of his business. Just like what was going on with him and Robin was nobody’s business.

“So what’s going on between you and Robin?” Dante asked late Friday afternoon when they’d finished coaching the kids in Dante’s after-school basketball league.

Dylan sighed, sitting down on the hardwood floor to stretch. His body wasn’t as young as it used to be, and he was starting to feel as though he was burning the candles at both ends. “Nothing. Why?”

Dante stacked some basketballs on a rack. “Because you told Camilla that you guys were dating.”

“No, I said that I told Mrs. Epson that we were dating.”

“So are you and Robin dating or not?”

“I’m not sure,” Dylan answered honestly.

“Come on. Your reputation around town as a ladies’ man is well-earned. You can’t seriously tell me that you don’t know how dating works.”

“Yes, I know how dating works, little brother.” He pulled the whistle off his neck and chucked it at Dante. “And I’m not the only Sanchez who had that reputation. Just because you’re getting married and became a daddy doesn’t mean that you can rewrite the past.”

“Had that reputation?” Dante asked. “Or has that reputation still?”

“Leave it to the teacher to point out the difference in past and present tense.”

“Stop stalling and answer my original question. What’s going on between you and Robin?”

Dylan lifted his arms. “I don’t know. She’s been helping me a lot with ranch stuff. I guess you could say we’re becoming friends.”

“The ol’ just friends routine, huh? Eloise and I tried to tell ourselves that, too.”

“I don’t really see a need to define it,” Dylan said defensively.

“Eloise and I said that about our relationship, as well. Keep in mind, though, that if you don’t define it, someone else eventually will.”

Dylan rose to his feet to do some lunges. “Then let them define it.”

“I think they already have. Mrs. Epson was in Mom’s salon this morning and said she saw you two at the feedstore and you guys couldn’t keep your hands off each other.”

“So?” Dylan blew out a noisy breath to let his brother know exactly how annoyed he was with their conversation.

“So you never hold me like this when we’re shopping.” Dante tried to wrap one of his arms around Dylan’s waist.

Dylan responded by elbowing his brother in the rib cage.
