Christa was curled up on the living room sofa with a copy of The Case of the No- So-Nice-Nurse by Mabel Maney when Esther let herself in through the garage.

She marked her place in the book, stood up, and stretched. “Hi, Mom. What’s for supper?”

Esther set her purse down on the kitchen island and joined her daughter in the living room. “Sometimes I think the only reason you’re glad to see me is because I feed you.”

“Yep.”

A pitiful whine from the end table drew their attention. Kracker had Missy cornered under the table. Whenever the little dog tried to make an escape, Kracker growled and swiped at the little dog with his paw.

“Aren’t they cute?” said Christa. “They’ve been doing that all afternoon.”

“Well, for heaven sake, put a stop to it. Suppose Missy has to…you know.”

Christa sighed and went to rescue her peekapoo, shoving Kracker unceremoniously out of the way with one foot.

Esther said, “I’m going to change my clothes, and then I’m going to ransack the freezer until I find something for dinner.”

“Cool, Mom.”

“And there’s no way you could have done that yourself?” Esther asked.

“Not the way you do. Everything tastes better when you fix it, even if it’s only something you’ve defrosted.”

Esther’s lips twitched. “Don’t use your charm on me. I taught you that trick.”

Christa ran across the room and caught Esther in a hug from behind. “And it always works.”
