“Dangerous is wrath concealed. Hatred proclaimed doth lose its chance of wreaking vengeance.”11

– Seneca

Use of countervailing force is an individual decision based on each unique situation, taking into account legal, moral, ethical, religious, and psychological considerations. While there are several factors to take into account, let us assume that you will only respond with violence when it is prudent to do so. Having said that, before you find yourself tangling with an aggressor on the street, a certain amount of introspection is still required to help you determine how and when you should respond.

Ask yourself the following questions:

Given a clear, present, and unavoidable danger to yourself or your loved ones, could you kill in self-defense? Really think about that. Could you crush the life out of another human being with your hands, feet, or a makeshift weapon? This kind of violence is very close and very personal. Could you crush someone’s throat, bash in his head, impale his heart, or ventilate his lung, and watch him or her die from your actions?

Given a clear, present, and unavoidable danger to yourself or your loved ones, could you maim someone in self defense? Could you gouge out an eye, shatter an eardrum, dislocate a joint, knock out teeth, or otherwise cause permanent injury to another human being, even if he/she started the fight?
