Everyone should have their own BOB. If your child can carry a backpack full of books he/she can carry an individual BOB. This is in case people get separated. Smaller children should at least carry the survival supplies detailed later on in this book. Almost any kind of backpack will do as long as it can hold what you want to carry. What you carry depends on where you are, where you are going, time of year, your physical condition, and the anticipated social environment through which you will travel.

At a minimum, your BOB should contain provisions for the following areas: Water, food, navigation, first aid, shelter, and fire. Remember when I said you cannot live out of your BOB indefinitely? Well that was true. Your BOB is just to assist you in getting to your alternate location.

My family’s BOBs have a separate bag of clothing attached to each one. We call this a Naked Bag. This is in case we must grab-n-go in the middle of the night when we are wearing pajamas. Each contains underwear, socks, t-shirt, long sleeved shirt, and long pants all tightly rolled up and tied with a bandanna. The clothing is earth toned but not camouflaged. Each bag also contains a pair of boots. In winter, we drape a coat over each BOB as well.

For clothing you will want earth-toned, tough, outdoor type clothes. You can spend hundreds of dollars at a sporting goods store or you can spend only a few shopping at a thrift store. Just remember this: when the balloon goes up no one will be critiquing your fashion sense or lack thereof. You don’t want camouflage because in many (and perhaps most) instances, you will stick out more wearing BDUs than otherwise dressed. Picture the film clips you have seen of hurricane survivors. Remember the pictures of New York City on 9-11? A whole family looking like militia members will draw unwanted attention.

Our Naked Bags are just attached with a snap link so we can grab the entire (unwieldy) package if we must flee scantily clad into the night. But the extra bag can also be quickly jettisoned if we start out adequately clothed.

For water you will want to carry some in your BOB and have a means to collect and purify more. Water is heavy at about eight pounds per gallon. If you are walking with a rucksack you will need at least a gallon a day and probably more. Trying to carry this much will quickly become a self-defeating proposition. It is never a bad idea to pre-select likely water sources along your bug out route(s). You could even cache water along the way. Just buy a case of bottled water and bury it - it will be there when you need it.

You will need food to fuel your trek. I suggest items that can be consumed on the go with limited fuss. Power Bars, EAS bars and other food bars are good. So are jerky, peanuts, crackers
