I jolt from my rest when a chilly glass is pressed to my cheek. Looking up, I see Ethan holding out what looks to be eggnog. I stare at him dubiously just to rile him up. "It's not Christmas yet."

"Yeah, I know, Coop," he huffs, pressing the cold glass on my face again as retaliation. "Just take it."

"Cold eggnog?" I visibly look curious as I take it. I don't mind it at all, but this wasn't a staple in our household. "Living on the edge?"

He rolls his eyes playfully, slumping on the seat next to me. "Oh, yeah. There's some alcohol in there, too."

I laugh, shaking my head and take a quick sip. "Mhm. Oh, you weren't kidding. Okay."

Ethan grabs his phone and the first few notes of a melody plays through the speaker placed on the mantle. He sighs in satisfaction, wiggling to get comfortable in his seat.

"Hozier?" I make an approving noise, nodding as I take a sip of the eggnog. "Not bad, old man."

He rolls his eyes, the corner of his mouth lifting in a crooked smirk. "I don't think I'm that much older than you. Also, why do you look surprised?"

"I don't know! I just didn't expect you to like this kind of music, with your vibe and all." I wave a hand in his general direction. "You know, with the bike, and the dark clothing, and the moody vibe."

Ethan makes a contemplative face, comically looking down at his current choice of clothing. He pouts, mumbling. "I'm wearing white."

The laugh that bubbles out surprises me, titling my head back with the force of it. Ethan shoves my shoulder as hard as he can without spilling my drink and he chuckles. "You ever heard the phrase 'never judge a book by its cover'? Come on."

I turn to face him, one leg bent on the couch and leaning my head on the cushion. "Okay, fine. I'm not judging. You're an onion. Full of layers. Full of surprises. So tell me more about yourself, Mr. Onion."

"That's a horrible nickname," Ethan deadpans, scrunching his face. "I already told you things in the restaurant."

And at the park, none of us say out loud but the implication is there. I nod in agreement. "Surely there's more, right? I'll tell you something if you'll tell me. Come on. Bonding time!"

He rolls his eyes but starts sharing. We go one by one, comparing answers to different questions and prompts. Our similarities and differences somehow work well, either matching perfectly or being the complete opposite.

I love getting to know him, taking in every small detail. What he likes and how he seems to brighten up considerably, even with his meager explanations. His face scrunches up at the things he's not fond of, but immediately rectifies it once he hears that it's something I appreciate.

He tells me how he met Jordan, she was his and Lia's classmate back in school and was the only person who, not once, turned her back on them when everyone in town seemed to do so.
