A few minutes later, the pickup truck slowly backed out of the driveway. Farmer Lemmings drove with the window down, his hand outstretched and holding a length of rope tied around Tomkin’s neck. He drove about a half mile per hour down the road and back to the farm. Tom glared out the window at me, his nostrils flared and eyes narrowed.

The police officer scribbled things in a little notebook. “Look, kid. You’re a minor so none of this is going to be on your record, and Farmer Lemmings opted not to charge you for goat-napping or destruction of his grandson’s phone. You’re lucky.”

“Yes, sir,” I mumbled.

Dad put his hand on my shoulder with a big sigh. Turning me toward him, he added, “And Lucy will be paying for Tom’s new phone with her allowance and chore money.”

The next day, I saw that I finally did make it into the newspaper. Mom pointed it out, a small paragraph in the daily police log. “Officer responded to what appeared to be a goat-napping underway. Minor-aged culprit promises to avoid future encounters with farm animals.”

Mom laughed, spreading out the newspaper around where I perched on the kitchen table to catch the clipped hair she trimmed from my right side to match my goat-gnawed left. “I’d say all’s well that ends well, Lucy. You needed a haircut anyway.”

Dad walked by holding Molly. “Think they’ll give you a hard time at school about this?”

“Yes,” I whimpered. “Can’t I be homeschooled now? Please.”

“Nay,” Mom said, stretching out the word to sound like Tomkin.

Dad piped in, “I’m sure it won’t ‘goat’ out of hand.”

My life is ruined.
