Chapter 14

Robert Wolffard

After catching her when her legs gave out, Assistant U.S. Attorney, Robert Wolffard, turned from tough lawyer to caring father, cradling Cherisse in one arm and the terrified boys in his other as the house began to fill with uniformed and plain-clothed officers and agents. Though his ears were still ringing, the sobbing of the children kept him alert. His first instinct was to move them away from the sight in the living room, and they clung to his legs as he steered them into the kitchen. There they waited, although it was not long. Shortly after the first squad car arrived, an ambulance followed, and the street became aglow with blessed red and blue lights as the sun began to set. The cavalry had arrived.

Though not mortally wounded, Flattery was rushed off to surgery for a gunshot wound that entered just above his vest and grazed his subclavian artery. Despite his injuries, he had been able to trip their assailant, distracting him long enough for Cherisse Nicholson to take control of the situation in a way he never expected. If Rob had found her enigmatic before, then he was even more smitten by her sheer bravery now.

At the moment, all traces of her heroics had disappeared, and she continued to tremble all over in shock, mumbling incoherently about shooting a man with Brandon’s help. He admitted that he was selfishly pleased with the way she clung to him, and he had no intentions of letting her go. Despite the chaos surrounding them, a calm feeling settled over him as the family hugged him with all their might. For the first time ever, he desired one of his own – this one, to be exact. He never wanted to let them go.

As Rob absorbed the strange new feelings, Mikey sniffled and tugged on his jeans. Glancing down, he saw the frightened redhead staring up at him with tears in his large blue eyes. Loosening his grip on Cher, Rob bent and scooped him into his arms before reaching for Tyler to do the same. Once both boys were on the counter, he hugged them tight, again feeling an overwhelming need to console them and make them feel safe again.

“It’s okay now,” he whispered. “It’s all over.”

Cher stepped closer, her hip brushing his, and she rested her head against his shoulder. Together they shielded the boys from the activity in the other room and waited for the inevitable.

He strained to hear discernible pieces of the conversations in the other room but only picked up bits and pieces. Cher’s shots were true, but their assailant was still alive, and Zachary Evans’ voice was laced with fury as he barked out demands to get every bit of information they could out of him, by any means necessary. Rob had never heard his friend sound so furious before. Although Zach was one of the most determined FBI agents Rob knew, he always maintained a professional attitude. However, at the moment, he was animalistic in his demands, almost crazed.
