Chapter Eight

Ace stood at the end of the breakfast buffet, greeting their guests as they passed and keeping an eye on Kate. They’d gone in separate directions once they’d gotten topside, thinking they’d cover more ground working independently. It was a good plan, but it didn’t stop him from thinking about – and worrying about—her. He cleared his throat against the knot of guilt that seemed to surface each time he thought of Kate these days.

He’d never meant to throw her under the bus, as she’d so eloquently described it, to the Bureau. If Ace had known she’d be fired he’d never have said anything. Or he would’ve lied. He’d never done that before in his career, lied under oath, but if it would’ve saved Kate’s job and meant they’d still be together and happy he would’ve done it in a heartbeat.

Hell, it wasn’t as if he hadn’t already broken protocol by heading down to Mexico because his sources said Kate was in danger. He knew she’d needed his help, even if she never admitted it. She was stubborn that way, one of the many things he loved about her. And he’d almost died on that screwed-up mess of a mission, and would’ve done it a hundred times again just to have her look at him with the caring and affection as she had that day. To have her kiss him with such longing and gentleness. To have the chance to tell her he loved her … .

“Ah, Roger, darling,” Alexis said, taking his arm and drawing Ace back to the present. She was wearing another diaphanous maxi-dress that billowed pastel tie-dyed colors in the breeze. “Such a lovely brunch, isn’t it?”

“Yes. Fine.” He noticed her gaze drifting to Benny again, who stood talking to Ned and Penny a few feet away. Ace made a mental note, then shifted his attention back to the task at hand—making Alexis think he was interested in her so he could try to figure out why she had the dye on her hands.

The brunch really was lovely. The long table was covered in gleaming stainless steel warming trays heaped with food. Turquoise accents added to the ocean atmosphere, and when it came to the food, Carlotta had in fact outdone herself. There was every kind of breakfast treat you could imagine. Everything from croissants to kippers and tomatoes to turkey. And where in the world had they gotten a dolphin-shaped ice sculpture?

He shook his head and played the part of doting host to the hilt. “You look beautiful as always, my dear Alexis. Fresh as a daisy. Did you just come from your stateroom?”

“Yes.” She glanced at Benny again, who was looking in their direction now, and gave him a slightly hurt look. “But a girl can’t wait around down there forever, you know, for some man to come along.” She shivered slightly and shook off the frown puckering her brow.

“I can’t imagine you have to wait around much for men.” Ace tried to keep a straight face as he charmed her.
