Chapter 14
CATHERINE
Catherine spent the day bawling, studying SAT flash cards, practicing her Mozart sonata, and then bawling some more.
She had posted on her Facebook page about her ticket and her dad taking her car away. Bryan called her. He wasnât too good on the phone. There were a lot of pauses. She felt embarrassed. How could a day that started off so beautifully, a year that seemed like it was going so well, come crashing down? Her stomach hurt the way it had before Christmas break.
Alyssa called her. She told her she was thinking about her and would be praying for her. Catherine knew Alyssaâs familyâs financial woes, and she realized she probably sounded like such a brat whining about her new car being taken away when Alyssaâs dad was now driving a taxi for a living.
Catherine thought about God the way she did from time to time when things were bleak. She had been to church with her mother a few times. Alyssa, her best friend, took her to youth group once or twice as well. She remembered once being over at Alyssaâs house when they were about ten and seeing a picture of a Christmas pageant framed on her bedside table. When Alyssa had gone to the bathroom, she had picked it up and stared. There must have been fifty children in the pageant at the altar. Little girls in angel costumes, little boys in sheep and cow costumes, older kids dressed up like shepherds with beards drawn on their soft cheeks, and a teenage couple standing before a manger where it looked like a real baby was kicking, red-faced and crying. She remembered thinking how beautiful it was. As she glanced back over the faces, she spotted Alyssa, who was the star that year. She had a huge piece of cardboard in the shape of a star tied to her torso. It was covered in gold garland. She had gold glitter on her rosy cheeks and she was glorious. As she heard Alyssa coming down the hall she had put the picture back down and walked over to the chalkboard where they were playing school, but every now and then she would look over to the picture and wonder what it was that made it so beautiful.
She thought of Bryan and Coach Christiansen. She had seen them pray before the meets. And once, when they won the low-country regionals, he had gotten down on bended knee and looked down at his sneakers for a long time. She knew what he was doing.
He and Alyssa both attended Camp St. Christopher out on Seabrook Island. She knew it was a Christian camp because sheâd seen evidence in Alyssaâs room: fish on rainbow strings with the camp logo, T-shirts with scripture, and even a baseball cap that said âWhere the glory of God meets the glory of His creation to revive the glory of His people.â
Once she had looked up the camp online and showed it to her mother, but
