CHAPTER 21

“So, what are your Holiday plans?” Carol asked as I was clearing out my cubicle.

It was Christmas Eve and the last day of our prelim work. Brian said we could leave by noon since the company was shutting down for the Christmas holiday. I didn’t think I’d be wrapped up with all my work by noon. Carol said she had no plans for the evening, and she’d be happy to stay and help me. That seemed odd. Not that she offered to stay and help me, but I wondered why she wouldn’t be with her family the night before Christmas. Even if she didn’t have a husband or kids, surely she had parents. Or maybe the dude with the Porsche… somebody.

As usual, I had underestimated the time it would take to get all my prelim work wrapped up, and it was going on five o’clock. True to her promise, Carol stayed.

All things considered, I felt I did a good job my first time on a real audit. Wrapping the cord around my 10-key, I was thinking about the holiday and how I looked forward to spending Christmas with my family.

Carol and I continued to talk over the cubicle wall with no concern of being overheard. Everyone else had cleared out. They would be with their families now. I would be with mine soon.

The PA system was still playing holiday music, hinting Christmas was around the corner. I was humming along and feeling good about my accomplishments since beginning the GEL audit, thinking of how proud my family was of me.

I went to the war room to drop off some binders. It was eerie with the place so empty, except for Rufus, the maintenance guy. Rufus was busy taking down the fifteen-foot Christmas tree in the GEL lobby. Christmas had yet to pass, but it would be depressing to see it after returning from the holidays. He told me he’d rather take it down now.

I walked past Rufus and returned to my cubicle. Seeing him busily taking down the tree caused me to think about the new year ahead. 1983 would be an exciting year, and I was eagerly anticipating it. I had a good feeling about what the new year would bring. Satisfying feelings warmed me when Carol’s voice seemed closer. I turned. She was standing in the doorway. She looked different. Sexy, alluring, sultry… different.

She had balanced her sleek frame in-between the sides of the entrance to my cube, her arms extended outward. She was showing more cleavage than she had earlier in the day. My eyes settled first on the lacy fringe of her bra. I stared at her longer than a married man should. She didn’t speak, nor did I. My eyes followed her frame downward, slowly, taking her all in. She wasn’t wearing hose. Barefoot, too. As she rubbed her shin with her foot, slowly up and down, I caught the shimmer of her knees. Her calves were taut, muscular. Watching her caused my groin to stir.
